Provider Types
When adding an external service provider to your farm, you select a provider type that determines their role and how they appear in your records.
Available Provider Types

Internal Staff vs External Providers
EquineOps distinguishes between two classifications when adding staff:
| Internal Staff | External Provider | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Team members who work at your farm | Outside professionals who visit your farm |
| Examples | Grooms, trainers, barn managers | Farriers, vets, dentists |
| Access | Full staff dashboard (role-based) | Provider dashboard with limited scope |
| Provider type | Not applicable | Required (farrier, vet, dentist, etc.) |
| Business name | Not applicable | Optional |
| License info | Not applicable | Optional (number and jurisdiction) |
You can convert between internal staff and external provider at any time from the staff member’s detail page using the Convert to External or Convert to Internal action.
Provider Profile Fields
When creating or inviting an external service provider, you can include:
- Provider Type (required) — Determines their role and dashboard experience
- Business Name — Their practice or company name (e.g., “Smith Farrier Services”)
- License Number — Professional license or certification number
- License Jurisdiction — State, province, or region where licensed
These details appear on the provider’s profile and help your team identify the right professional for each service.
Choosing the Right Type
If a provider offers multiple services, choose the type that best matches their primary role at your farm. For example:
- A vet who also does dental work — choose Veterinarian
- A farrier who also does bodywork — choose Farrier
- A specialist with no matching category — choose Other
The provider type affects which program data they see in their dashboard, so pick the one most relevant to the work they do for you.
